Using the concepts of quantum and statistical mechanics, we apply and develop methods for computer simulation of excitation process of relevance for photocatalysis and solar cells - such as the localization of electrons and holes in nanostructures and their transfer to organic molecules adsorbed on the surface. Overview:

The mission of the PFF Community Leadership Program is to provide life-changing experiences of social value to ten Queen’s Fellows over a three-year period (2011-2014) in order to create positive, sustainable change for communities in need in international locations.

Scholarship Details:

A new fellowship program will provide opportunities for students to develop their global leadership skills by working with international communities in need. The PFF Community Leadership Program, funded by the Pathy Family Foundation and administered by the Queen’s University International Centre (QUIC), offers up to $30,000 for each eight to 12-month fellowship. Two fellowships will be awarded this year and four fellowships each of the following two years.“Many leadership-oriented students dream up innovative projects but struggle to find the funding to carry them out. This program will empower them to affect social change around the world,” says Rowena Selby, QUIC education abroad advisor.

Project Details:

Projects can vary in scope as long as they address a community need. Innovative and entrepreneurial projects of social and intercultural significance will receive special consideration. Applicants must also show the potential on-going sustainability of the project after the fellowship. The foundation chose to partner with Queen’s because it was impressed by QUIC’s support for and commitment to international student activities and programs. SCHOLARSHIPS

Selection criteria

Applicants will be selected based on their previous academic career and on their Curriculum Vitae.

Amount of the scholarship

The gross amount of the Verrès Campus scholarship is 10.000 Euro per year (30.000 Euro for the complete period). The exact net sum is dependent upon the individual tax conditions of each student, which can be verified only upon the arrival of the student.
The amount of the scholarship will not be increased in case the student will need more time to graduate than indicated.
The allocation of the scholarship is dependent upon the submission of the original documentation, which must correspond with the documentation attached to the application form (see the “Selection outcomes” section below).
Payment of the scholarship occurs periodically. The first instalment is dependent upon the possession of the relevant documentation (residence permit, Italian fiscal code, and bank account in the name of the scholarship recipient), all obtainable upon arrival in Italy.

Requirements to maintain the scholarship

Given that it is not possible to combine the benefits received from more than one scholarship, students who are assigned another study grant while receiving the Verrès Campus scholarship must promptly notify the Politecnico di Torino.
Payment of the scholarship will be suspended if the academic performance of the recipient does not meet a satisfactory level.
In case the recipient does not regularly attend the activities at the Verrès Campus, the scholarship will be revoked.

Social Science Research Council (SSRC) and the Japan Foundation Center for Global Partnership (CGP) announce the Abe Fellowship for Journalists (AFJ). Funding for the fellowship is provided by CGP.

The Purpose of the Fellowship

The Abe Fellowship for Journalists is designed to encourage in-depth coverage of topics of pressing concern to the United States and Japan through individual short-term policy-related projects.

The Fellowship Research Agenda

Applicants are invited to submit proposals on one of the three themes below.

1) Traditional and non-traditional approaches to security and diplomacy: Appropriate research topics include transnational terrorism, internal ethnic and religious strife, infectious diseases, food safety, climate change, and non-proliferation, as well as the role of cultural initiatives in peace-building.

2) Global and regional economic issues: Suitable topics include regional and bilateral trade arrangements, globalization and the mitigation of its adverse consequences, sustainable urbanization, and environmental degradation.

3) The role of civil society: Appropriate issues include demographic change, immigration, the role of NPOs and NGOs as champions of the public interest, social enterprise, and corporate social responsibility.

Policy Relevance

The Program defines policy-relevant research as the study of existing public policies for the purpose of: a) deepening understanding of those policies and their consequences; and b) formulating more effective policies. Policy-relevance also pertains to the public dialogue on contemporary social issues.

Eligibility

•The AFJ competition is open to citizens of the United States and Japan with at least five years of professional journalistic experience in newspapers, newsmagazines, wire services, and on-line news organizations. Freelancers are also eligible. Nationals of other countries must be permanent residents of the United States or Japan, or have a long-term affiliation with the American or Japanese journalistic communities.
•U.S.-based applicants with no previous journalistic employment in Japan have priority; Japan-based applicants with no previous journalistic employment in the United States have priority.
•Proposals must be non-partisan.

Fellowship awards are contingent upon receipt of funding from the Japan Foundation Center for Global Partnership.

Fellowship Terms

•Fellows are expected to produce an analytical article or feature story that will inform public debate or a policy community. The Fellow and his/her news organization will decide when to run the article.
•The program provides support for six weeks in Japan or the United States. The term may be divided between the principal destination and another country. For example, for Americans, four weeks in Japan and two weeks in another country in the region, and for Japanese, four weeks in the United States and two weeks in Canada or Mexico.
•The maximum stipend is $23,500, which includes one roundtrip air ticket, $500 to prepare for overseas fieldwork, and support for interpretation based on requests. Fellows may receive salary from their employers, but cannot carry out assignments while on the award.
•Fellows are required to attend the Abe Fellows' Retreat from January 7-10, 2011. The fellowship tenure may begin between April 1 and December 31, 2011.

AINSE Research Fellowships are offered at academic level B for outstanding and enthusiastic scientists with 3 – 8 years postdoctoral experience to undertake research in areas of science and technology requiring use of the research facilities at ANSTO. Project Description:

Based in forests and climate change group, Department of Biological Sciences and Climate Risk CORE of Macquarie University in Sydney, Australia.

One graduate student is required Australian Research Council Linkages (LP0992238) studied to help the project as the biological diversity of forest ecosystems and their water use affects the susceptibility to drought. The project involves the construction and control of forest regeneration experimental plantations with different levels of diversity found in western Sydney. The role of this dissertation is to mathematical models which afforestation of water utilization and productivity features, provides a theoretical basis for experimental work to develop.

Eligible candidates

The project should be completed in both biology and ecology suit with strong quantitative skills, or a degree in mathematics, statistics, computer science, physics, or interest in plant ecology. The candidate must have an academic career with a strong distinction (first class) or equivalent.

Getting Rid of the SAT

According to a recent Capital News Service story, Salisbury University on Maryland’s Eastern Shore may soon permanently discard the standardized test admission requirement for well-qualified applicants. In recent years, a number of colleges and universities, some of them elite, have been re-examining the role of aptitude tests in their selection process.

Some now believe that grade-point average, class standing and extracurricular activities are better predictors of success in college than scores on standardized tests such as the SAT and ACT.

According to Martha Allman, director of admissions at North Carolina’s Wake Forest University, “The research is becoming pretty undeniable that (a standardized test) isn’t a good prediction of academic success.”

Institutions of higher learning want, of course, to enroll the brightest students they can attract, but a student’s potential for success at college is the focus of the admissions process.

Here is Maryland, McDaniel, Washington and Goucher colleges have already marginalized the importance of standardized test scores. They can be submitted, but are no longer a general requirement for admission.

Many believe that SAT tests are racially, culturally and/or ethnically biased. Doing away with that requirement, they argue, attracts a more diverse pool of applicants.

Institutions such as Salisbury, McDaniel and Washington are no longer requiring test scores from well-qualified students — those with a good class standing and high grade-point average. Others, such as Goucher, have done away with the requirement for all students, though scores are necessary for students seeking merit scholarship consideration.

Salisbury is running a five-year trial of the test-optional policy for high achieving applicants, and Ellen Neufelt, vice president of student affairs at Salisbury, said so far it has not been an issue. According to a assessment by the school’s board of regents, test-submitting and non-test-submitting student had similar GPAs and retention rates over two years.

The debate about the value of standardized test scores isn’t cut and dried, of course. Many continue to believe that these scores provide indisputable indications about the ability and achievement of students, indicators that class rankings and GPAs may not, due to the wide academic disparity among high schools around the nation. Others said that while good test scores may say something about applicants’ knowledge and intelligence, the dedication and hard work required to achieve a high GPA and rank among peers is a more accurate reflection of future success on a college campus.

In the end, making admission tests optional for students may be the most sensible policy for them and the institutions to which they apply. While they may not be the single, best indicator or a student’s potential to succeed, they can provide valuable information. And in the end, of course, colleges may assign whatever degree of importance they choose to the test scores.

Leadership

Leadership is a meta-quality that should be reflected in all aspects of a student’s life, including her academics and paid employment, as well as her community service. Beyond the initiative it takes to become a leader, scholarship committees are also looking for the consensus building skills and motivational abilities required for leadership success.

Getting elected class president doesn’t necessarily prove you are a true leader. Scholarship committees will be more interested in the way you utilize your position to help others or rally fellow students to lobby for change.

To show the selection committee that you are leadership material, focus your essays on a pivotal leadership opportunity or challenge and reflect on how that experience shaped you. Letters of recommendation that cite examples of your leadership skills can be very helpful to your candidacy, as well.

Do not staple documents together unless directed to do so. It is always reasonable to use paper clips to keep materials tidy. Do not place the application in a special folder unless directed to do so. The place to be creative and innovative is in the preparation of your essay. When preparing the applications, just follow the directions you are given.

Make a complete copy of the application before you send it. Don't skip the transcript or the financial aid statement because you know those are included; it is always important to have a complete record of everything you send the funder in exactly the form it was received by the funder.
